cpu fan?

alien42

Lifer
I am currently collecting parts for a new system that will end up something like this:

asus a8n-sli deluxe
athlon 64 3200+ (for now)
6600GT (for now)
antec p160 (2x120 fans)
74 Gb raptor
1 large data drive
DVD drive

Will a generic cpu fan suffice or is something more powerful like the xp-120 or zalman 7700 really needed? i do not plan on overclocking much if at all.

I wouldn't go 'generic' on a critical part such as the heatsink and fan for the processor. Go with quality brands for both the heatsink and the fan. Personally, I'm using Thermalright for the heatsink and either Panaflo or Enermax for the fans... So far, good results with those combo's...

thanks akira,

maybe i should clarify what i meant by 'generic'. i will definately buy a name brand fan and heatsink but i would rather run a smaller combo instead of something as huge as the xp120 or 7700.

SLK-948U, if you can locate one. I had that on my Athlon64 before moving to the XP-120... Without more testing, and run time, I'm leaning towards them performing pretty much the same. I'll have a better idea by the end of the month. If the XP-120 doesn't do better (either less noise or better temps) then I might just try the big water unit inside...

The 90nm A64's (which is what you will be getting) run very cool, so the retail heatsink will be more than enough. Even if you OC, the retail fan will be fine. Duvie was running his 3000+ (90nm) at 2.6 (i think) for a while on the retail fan.

honestly, the thermalright is probably the best but when i bought mine the thermalright wasn't out yet so i had to settle w/ the swiftech which im very pleased with
