CPU fan stops when running memtest86+

Hi all.

* HP Pavilion a1209n
* Intel Celeron Processor
* 512 MB DDR RAM

The CPU and rear case fan stops completely when running memtest86 (and memtest86+) from the ultimate boot cd. I do not receive errors in either memtest. This doesn't happen with the Seagate Seatools diagnostic or booting to windows (regardless of load).

I suspect the processor may be overheating as the machine would previously crash to a no power state when running memtest for around five minutes. I'm not sure because I reseated the ram and was able to run it for 12 minutes before rebooting manually with the ESC key (cpu fan and rear case fan still weren't moving).

Edit: Memtest86+ has once again crashed the machine and I'll assume due to overheating of the processor.

Anyone have any ideas what may be happening here?

Thanks

Try turning off any of those automatic fan speed controllers in BIOS. Also, try updating your BIOS...could be a known, or unknown, issue.

This is definitely not normal, but I always run Memtest86 and Memtest86+ from their own burned CD. I have no idea what's on the Ultimate Boot CD. If your CPU fan is stopping, the machine will definitely crash.

Updated the BIOS and in both versions there is no difference (there are also no fan speed settings of any sort). I took RebateMonger's advice and decided to burn out the memtest86+ iso and booted it. Same issue.

@Rebatemonger: I had thought that it might be possible that celeron processors on an appropriate mobo might have had an option for complete spin down of the fan (since it would still be passively cooled by the heatsink). Guess not :p

In any event, I'm still not sure what's going on and think I'll post to memtest's forums and the ubcd forums to notify them of the behavior if nothing else.

Thanks guys

The rear case fans shouldn't be able to be controlled at all, unless it's plugged into the motherboard itself.

Perhaps your computer isn't getting enough power to the fans, which causes them to shut down (as well as causing the system to crash) ?

Probably not, but just an idea.

TheUltimateBootCD is a free ISO you can download full of free utilities for pretty much everything you'd want to diagnose on your PC (motherboard, CPU, RAM, hard drive, etc..). I'm surprised some of you didn't know about it. Having Memtest86 and Memtest86+ on the same CD shouldn't affect anything.

limer, are you sure you aren't doing the bitfade test? I didn't stick around when I was doing it, but the way the test runs it sounds like the system goes to sleep at some point in the test. The bitfade test fills your RAM with 1 and 0s, then I think puts your system to sleep for x amount of minutes then wakes your system up to check if any of those 1s and 0s have changed.

IsLNdbOi:

I read a similar thread over at the x86-secrets forum about bitfade and the fan issue.

Bitfade and fans

I wasn't aware of the bit fade until I hit x86's forums and doubt I'm using it because I use the default boot with no options. I also see the usual set of patterns memtest uses and will assume this is not bitfade.

and a w00t for ubcd :D

@Kirby64 It just so happens the rear case fan is attached to the mobo. Strangely, I never thought to check the PSU fan. I assumed that unless the bearings in the fan on the PSU went, it was a power on/fan on scenario (which you seem to suggest)

Thanks again for all the input guys

limer, that's my thread over at the x86-secrets forum. I went there and asked when I saw this thread here. Let us know what happened if you find out. That's kind strange that your system would do that when running memtest.
