CPU fan spins...nothing else happens, help?

I have an Intel D865GBF mobo, a 400W Allied PSU, and a 3.0Ghz P4.

I put everything together, and when i plug the power cable in, the CPU fan starts spinning, and the light on the mobo turns on...but nothing else happens. the hard disc drives don't spin, and the dvd rom drive doesn't receive any power either. there appears to be no power going to ANYTHING but the CPU fan...The power switch doesn't do anything, to turn off the CPU i have to flip the switch in the back. Does anybody have any ideas?

It sounds to me like you have either a dead motherboard (most likely), or a dead cpu, assuming you know that the power supply is good.

i suppose is hould have mentioned that i bent about 5 pins on the CPU when putting it in. it took me about an hour, a very steady hand, and a magnifying glass but i bent them back into place and the CPU fit into place. it's probably the CPU then?

Check the manual. Most of the motherboard manuals I've looked at recently have an issue like this in the "troubleshooting" section near the end. The last time this happened to me, I reseated the CPU and it worked fine.

Do you have your system speaker plugged in? Are you getting a beepcode of any sort?

Are all the mobo power plugs plugged? I don't build many P4's but I think they have that seperate power cord aside from the big one.

2nd thought. I'm not sure on this because its been so long. Can anyone verify that the power_good signal not being sent from the PSU could cause these condidtions? I don't recall if it would spin the fans and light up that stuff without spinning the drives.

To test if its the CPU you should be able to remove it and boot the system..at that point you should get errors or some sort of beep code.

I'll keep tabs on this thread. I hope the best for you.

Edit: If you have a Volt meter check the power plugs for the drives for 5 and 12 volts. if none of that fixes anything

Problem solved, thanks to Gigaah!

it was the 12v plug...i've never built a P4 before and i didn't plug that in. whoops! Thanks again Gigaah!
