CPU fan shorting out

A PC that I threw together for a friend is shutting down because the CPU fan stops. She found that if she "taps" it, it starts again. So I'm thinking there is maybe a short on the 3pin connector on the mobo. Can I replace that fan with a fan that has a regular 4 pin connection...directly into the power supply? Does anyone know where I can find a fan for an Intel CPU that I can do this with?

maybe the fan is out of balance? bb stuck? not really sure what the setup is but some m/b will not start up without a signal on the cpu fan header, or there may be a bios setting for it for you to disable it and put on a fan w/ the 4pin molex connector.

What is she tapping exactly?

I just had a bad power supply that would shut down/reboot the computer every time I tapped it.

No...she taps the FAN to get it running again, not the PS. Of course, by the time the fan shuts down, the PC does as well. I do not think the fan has a short in it, there must be something wrong with the 3 pin plug on motherboard. What if I just got a 80mm case fan, and put it on the heatsink, then plugged it into the PS directly? NO...Intel too hot?

I think you'd lose the ability to monitor and adjust fan speeds. Some mb won't post without a cpu fan rpm reading, which I think can only be obtained when you plug the fan into the cpu plug on the mb unless you can disable it in the bios as mentioned earlier.

the 80mm would actually work better assuming it's not a low rpm fan. i have a 60mm -> 80mm fan adapter for my stock athlon HS. much quieter too and works.

thanks. Just put in a case fan that had 2 plugs on it, 1 to mobo and the 4pin to the PS, and is working fine.
