OK i have this HP machine and when i change the fan to something quiter and larger it will not boot. It will say CPU FAN error machine will turn off in 5 sec.

How can i get around this? I looked in bios and nothing about it is there.

i am guess maybe the CPU FAN sensor looks for a certain rpm and because my fan is quiter and bigger it is probaly 1/4 the speed at max?

your fan needs to be a 3 wire connector, and it must be connected to the cpu fan connector.

maybe theres only 2 pins going into the connector? mine has only two pins and i get that message everytime i startup too, but with my mobo i can just press f1 and it will load up

Sometimes low rpm fans can't be detected or the alarm limit is set too high in the BIOS. To resove the low-rpm not detected it often takes a BIOS update.

And as others said, you must have a fan with a speed sensor wire that works connected to the CPU fan connector on the mobo (specially marked CPU FAN) which is not necessarily the closest one to the CPU.

everything is in check.

The stock fan is a 3-pin fan and my new fan is a 3-pin fan. Both are in the CPU fan connecter.

I'll try a bios update if i can find one thanks and if anyone has anymore ideas that would be nice too :)

Ahh found it, sortof :)

i went to HP web site looking for bios updates and instead of find a bios update i start looking at Solve a problem page, search for "fan", and find my message.

Read though the long web site and i find a different way into the bios "F11 instead of F1" so i use it and there are more advance option like "Disable CPU Check".

Thanks for all the help guys. Uses this old machine for a simple HTPC untill i get all my parts in for a nice A64 one, so i would like to make it as quick as possible till then.
