my friend's computer has this strange problem. it would boot up, load into windows and then freeze up and different times. he opened up the case and cleaned things out, and would notice that after boot up, the cpu fan would be running fine, and then suddenly shut off and then the computer would freeze. he's already formatted and done a clean install of windows xp, checked all the connections. anyone have a clue? it's a pIII 550e, running on a intel 440lx chipset i think.

The fan could be a faulty variable speed unit but its sensor isnt picking up the increase in heat. Or it could be just a regular fan thats just plain dying. You dont have to go the route of buying a whole new heatsink for it (though that probably wouldnt hurt and you'd get better cooling) but instead just get a new fan for it.
