CPU Fan Problem

Alright, starting last week, sometimes when I would turn my computer on, after about 20 seconds one of my fans would start make a rattling noise. Usually I could just restart my computer and the noise would go away; and the cpu fan monitor was still reporting a normal rpm. Today though, its now making the noise everytime, like the fan is spinning too fast, and the monitoring program I use to check the rpm's for that fan isn't reporting anything. I have the fan connected to the 3-pin cpu fan header on the motherboard (which i know isnt exactly good). My question is, did I most likely cause serious damage somehow? If I just get a 4 pin molex connector and hook up the fan to the power supply should everything be ok? I just built this computer as my first a couple months ago so I'm definitely not an expert at this....

eh, nevermind....turns out its actually the northbridge fan on my NF7-s, which apparently is a common problem....sure didn't last very long. Guess i'll have to replace it with a new hsf.
