Hello I just bought a used acer slimline x1800,
it has a q8300 @ 2.5 and NV 7100 integrated

I have it set up as a HTPC , During DVD playback in media center the fan revs up very loud every few minutes for a few minutes.

In task manager there in almost no load on the system.

I tested in it out running 3 1080P flash videos . I maxed the CPU to almost 80% for 20 minutes and the CPU fan never revved up. Stayed at 1250 RPM the entire time with CPU temps of 45 to 50.

So media center playback 2% load, low temps and the fan revs very high

flash playback 80% load slightly higher temps and fan does not rev

I tried speedfan and I can't control the speed

in the bios there is a smartfan control, when I disabled it it ran the fan @ 100% with noise like a jet engine

Sure it's your CPU fan? In your flash tests you give the RPM, but you don't give the RPM for DVD playback.

Check to make sure it's not your DVD-RW making that sound. Also check GPU.
