I bought a retail boxed Athlon 1.2GHz a few months ago and it works great; however, the fan that came on the heat sink is just too noisy.

So my question is, can anyone recommend a quiet 60mm CPU fan for a non-overclocked 1.2GHz Athlon?

Just the fan, or a new HSF?

The fan is a 60mm Sanyo Denki. Very quiet, although if you think the retail fan is noisy, then I don't know how much of an improvement this can give you. I can barely hear my retail CPU fan over my hard drives (just the PS fan and the CPU fan).

Thanks, I thought no one was going to reply! Anyways, I'm just looking to get a new fan, and at 28dba that sanyo fan is looking good. I really don't know why the CPU fan is so noisy, it makes this horrible mechanical buzzing sound. From what I've read the retails are supposed to be pretty damn quiet so I guess I just got a bad one. Thanks for your help!

No problem. If it makes a horrible buzzing noise, it might be about to die. Watch out if the sound goes away. :) Another thing is that it might be needing a little lubrication. If you don't really want a new fan, peel off the sticker and add a drop of motor oil inside. Replace sticker. If it doesn't work, then Sanyo Denki for you. :)

sk-6 with some less noisy fan would be good,
If you are short of money get volcano 6cu + ASII

Thanks for everyone's help. I took a close look at the cpu fan, peeled back the sticker and there is no hole to add any lube...it's flat all the way across. Plus I could move the fan up and down a little bit so I'm sure that's why it is making the awful noise. I've concluded that I got a crappy fan and I will be investing in that Sanyo fan.
