CPU Fan Error

Hello all and sorry if this is not a motherboard issue, I'm 80% sure and need help. Read a forum topic here (which I can't find) that is a little similar. But more to the point.

CPU fan error (F1) on every boot

Only way to get it to start is to ignore the error (found that help here)

Computer has just been put together today and the speed of the fan is not being recorded by the bios (temp is recording and running fine however).

On a cold boot the fan seems to take a few turns and time (5-8) seconds to

Specs:
Processor: Core i5 2380p 3.1Ghz
Motherboard: Asus P8 Z77- vLX
Ram: 8Gb DDR1600Mhz
Power supply: Be quiet 450W
2 Internal Fans 1 LED 1 Cooling (120mm and 140mm) off the top of my head. (One of these buggers have decided not to work [LED one])
Hard Drive: WD 1.5 TB
Graphics: XFXR7850.

Just to let you know the same problem occurs when only the processor is connected, hence my deductions. However I am not that good at this.

Any help would be appreciated from a Scotsman.

First of all, is the fan from the CPU heatsink plugged into the proper FAN HEADER connector on the board?

In the BIOS, do you have it set to VOLTAGE (for 3-pin fans), or PWM (for 4-pin fans)?

You might just have an anomoly, where the fan doesn't spin up right away when you power on (BIOS bug?), and it triggers that error on boot. Or, it could be something more serious like a non-working CPU fan.

Some BIOSes allow you to disable CPU fan warning.

You might disable "CPU SMART FAN" or just "SMART FAN", this will make the fans run 100% all of the time.

plug the fan into another header, and see if it reports RPM, that way you know if it's the header or fan that is the problem.

Thanks for the reply people you have been very helpful however now my 80% sureness of motherboard went to 40% and is in favour of the fan being dumb.
(this could be now a posting in the wrong board, ADMIN!!)

larry - The settings for the bios are all okay, I had already told the computer to ignore the fan anyway so all is good there.

gpse - My fan has a 4 pin connector and all I can find next to the 4 pin it is in is a 3 pin. Would this still work? (I should just do it anyway and will in the next hour or so)

I have another fan which I will put in tomorrow afternoon to see if it works (different make of fan)

I feel that it is simply a case of the Bios not picking up the speed of the fan as when I reboot (the fan continues to run) I get the same CPU error.

Also overheating is not a problem on this new machine and I know as I HAVE NOT left it on to download Empire Total War all day while checking it.

I'lll be back!

try plugging another 4 pin fan to the CPU header if you have a spare 4 pin fan.
If you plug the 4 Pin fan into the 3 Pin Header, it should run at full speed and still give an RPM reading.

On my computer the bios doesn't show CPU fan speed, however under high load when the fan spins up, it'll show the RPM. I'm assuming my Fan doesn't report the RPM until spun to a certain RPM.

Put another fan in and again it won't register the speed of the fan at all.

Tried the new fan on the 4 pin and the 3pin (just in hope really)

I'll put this down to the motherboard and will settle with the fan just on ignore on the bios setting. There have been no issues with heat at all.

You guys have been fantastic and I wish you all the best, I will continue looking here and try to help out other users of this forum as I have had some excellent input.

Keep working hard guys and girls.

THanks and I have looked at this too, but I still get the Fan error here. LIke I just said (we replied at the same time good show) I need to ignore the fan speed to get through to boot.

The fan speed comes up as N/A even when spinning away happy as larry.
