CPU fan connect to PSU instead of mobo

Leros

Lifer
In this thread here I talked about my pc turning off (somtimes, randomly) after periods of inactivity. I set up a webcam and found out that the CPU fan was turning off.

I just figured this out (12:30 am). Tomorrow I am going to hook the cpu fan up to the PSU and hook a system fan up to the CPU fan connector on the mobo to test whether or not the problem is the fan or the mobo.

Would this be a bad thing to do? What about permanently? It seems like the cpu fan would be on as long as the computer is on.

Any dangers???

Thanks

Justin

If the case fan is 120mm it might not be safe to connect it to the motherboard (draws too much power).

Connecting the CPU's fan to the PSU should be OK as long as you use a normal connector and not one labeled "fan" (those are often thermal controlled by the case temp which is much lower than the CPU temp)

cool Idea hooking up a webcam to watch it for you. If the fan is not defective, then it will run the whole time the computer is on @ full speed when hooked directly to psu=not gonna hurt the proc. worst case scenario, the fan would wear out faster, but probably not.

Nope, no dangers.

You just won't be able to monitor the fan speed anymore. You should also turn off fan speed monitoring in the BIOS too.
