cpu fan, blowing or sucking...

k.. my stock intel fan just died. I just bought a new coolermaster HSF.. but the fan blows in the oposite dirction as with the intel one. (The intel one blows down into the HS, pulling air from above, and forcing it through the fins.)... but the coolermaster sucks air out of the HS and blows it up, away. (at least i think that's what it's doing.. uhh.. but it's hard to tell.. it doesn't feel as strong as the intel one)...

so yeah.. is this ok or not?

Update: There must be something wrong with the cooler master. I don't think it's making contact w/ my cpu properly... my temps are 50C right on boot.. (compared w/ 30C with my Intel stock just a few hours ago.

WTF?! the retention clips are in place and it looks like it's right down there.. this is too wierd.

It really does depend on the design of the heatsink...when it comes to the alpha 8942 the manufacturer's own guide says to have fan sucking air off of heatsink...being arebel I tested it and in fact the blowing method was about 1c better in idle and 2-3c under load, however the blowing method sent more heat scouring onto the mobo surface and I noticed my chipset temps went up quite a bit under load and the more heat was being placed on my ram and my vid cards.....So it was a toss up.. I use the suck method as manufacturer suggest and keep my other components cooler...

Also many like using duct mods and I have seen many suck air off and exhaust out of case as being quite effective in keeping overall case temps and cpu temps down. By taking that cpu air directly out kept the cpu hsf from just cycling that warmer air which reduces the ability to pull the heat off of the fins....

I favor sucking.

I have two fans in the top back of my case sucking and two fand in the bottom from of my case blowing.

When I had the cpu fan earlier blowing it gave me temp that were 10 higher than when I finally changing to sucking. This was it sucks the cool air from the front of the case and spits it out and then goes out the case smoothly. When two fans are sucking away from each other, this causes turbulence and isnt a good way to cool.

I really think there should be a sticky at the top of this forum and Cases & Cooling that discusses this topic..

Anyways, blowing onto is usually better

Blowing is only better when your case is open, I agree then, when you can get cool air to the fan, but when case is closed, sucking is better as long as the air getting sucked gets sucked out by another fan. Ovarll though I like sucking better. There is little sense in blowing air into the heatsink when the heatsink is trying to give off heat. With sucking, your helping it do its job better.
