ok this has been eating me away all morning.

I have a gigabyte 965p ds3, a conroe 6400 with stock fan on it. im using F4c bios.

after the system has been off awhile, when i power it up the CPU fan hangs, it will start, then stop, then start, etc. after 10 seconds it sometimes is fine. other times it keeps going and will periodically stop for a second after 3-4 minutes. Now it has been running a few hours , like its warmed up ...

im getting like 35-40 C on the cpu temp and 44 on the system temp. the fans are idling at 800-900 RPM though. is that normal? i have the cpu fan speeds set on auto in the bios by default. I know there are several options to manually adjust but i havent played with those.

gigabyte packaged the I-COOL tool that you can check temps etc out from windows. when i load this, my CPU fan just completly shuts off, and as soon as i close the program it starts again.

I was thinking the fan was just bad, but whats the link between all of this =X

The Conroes normally run pretty cool, and your BIOS probably has a fan speed control option where it will run the fan at the lowest speed possible to keep the processor below a certain temperature (prob. 40c in your case). There's probably a way to disable this if you really want to. If you want to replace the stock fan, though, you can get a Freezer 7 Pro for about $20, which will cool a lot better and be quieter.

ok thanks, that makes sense on the RPM and auto speed for the fans.

still looking for an answer as to why the fan would just completely stop sometimes, and completely fails when i load I-cool software :(
