CPU degrading in performance?

I have a question general to CPU's. I recently put together a computer with a prescott 530j cpu. now the story behind that is that i got so hyped off the dual core systems that i read more and more and came to the conclusion that the intel dual cores were more for me than the amds and that the intel dual cores werd only in lga 775 so i based my build around that but had to hold back on the dual core cpu until i coudl afford a new one. hence th 530j. well now my dual core is en route to me and as i wait for it i wonder how exactly this dual core processor is going to work for me because to tell you the truth the prescott did everything i demanded of it and never had a problem. Im no computer nerd but i have friends that are an they say i am really bad with multi tasking. i run mediaplayer, burn dvds, and play games like joint ops, counterstrike or guild wars all at the same time ( the not the threee games at the same time, duh ) but lately it seems taht my cpu has been slowing down. like i said i am gettin a new cpu so its nor really worrying me, i jsut wanted to knwo for my own knowledge on weather or not it is normal for a cpu to slow down after several months. any reply would greatly be appreciated. also, as i do not often go here, a reply to my email would be greatly appreciated. thanks again in advance. email is as follows : etwakko1@yahoo.com

First off the CPU is usually the last thing to go, how old is it and what makes you think the CPU is the one slowing things down and not a stuffed up OS or jammed up hard drive, which is more likely the case of system slow down, or even just simply needing a good defrag :)

Its probably not your CPU. It could be any number of things, including but not limited to:

1. Viruses/Spyware
2. Stuffy OS
3. The RAM
4. Defrag Needed

ok well i was running 2 gigs of ram before i noticed and now i have 4 gigs as of last week. well as far as viruses and spyware, i use spbot and ad-aware every single day when i get home frmo work, along with pccillan for checking for viruses. i hardly install anything on my computer but i do alot of downloading from the internet. i have owned the thing for maybe 4 months now.i did notice on my old laptop that the more i played music then the slower and slower it got. on a comparicson with my laptop, i figured the only thing that could slow it down was the harddrive playing music for like 18 hours a day. on that thing it could not have been spyware or viruses as i never ahd an internet connection since it was strictly a work computer ( i am stationed onboard a navy vessel and we cannot connect to the internet on our privately owned computers) with that said yes i do play alot of music on this new computer but i use a Maxtor external hard drive to play music and all my applications are on my inetrnal hard drive so there shouldnt be a problem with that. the only thing i see now is trying to do a defrag to see if that will help. thanks for all the inputs.

oen more thign on the topic of ram. When i installed the second 2 gigs of ram ( i had two 1 gig sticks at first, then i put in two sets of 1 gig ( 512x 2 sticks) ) the computer wouldnt work so i took more time doing it as the first time i hastily put the ram modules in. so yeah it was just that the modules wernt seated in properly . 20 minutes later it was up and running ... anyways if i were to right click my computer icon and look at properties it shows i only have 3 gigs of ram. if i were to ise cpuid then it shows only 2 gigs of ram. with cpuz it shows 4 gigs of ram. which is the correct one ?

Well first thing YES do a defrag and see how that goes. Slow downs can also happen because the hard drive is failing. That is a typical indication of a hard drive getting ready to fail. The system slows down and gradually over time goes slower and slower and slower until the drive craps. So regardless of how new or old it is hard drives die. Make sure for NOW you make a backup onto a CD or DVD your Data just incase it gets ready to crap.

As far as the ram, sounds like to me you put in a total of 3GB? I mean whatever amount you put in, should be all that Windows reports and if it's telling you one thing when it is really something else, then there is the possibility of system incompatibility, faulty system or, bad memory. I mean when everything works proper then it reports thing as they should be. So start somewhere and troubleshoot :)
