CPU dead?

Hi guys,

I had some trouble with my pc, sent the motherboard back to the manufacturer twice and finally got a new board. As you can imagine, this meant installing and pulling everything apart several times.

Well, after I received my new board and installed everything (once more) my pc would not start up. The fans would spin, the CDROMS and HD would go thru their power up routine etc but no post, no beep, nothing. I am afraid that the CPU got damaged during all this installing and then ripping apart again.

To answer some questions: no, I do no have another AMD TBird sitting around, no I don't know anyone who does have one either. And no, I couldn't reach AMD since they're closed for the Holidays.
There are two possibilities in my opinion: either the board is defect or the CPU is dead. Now, I really don't know how to rule either one of them out. All I know is that the CPU worked in the old board, even though that board had some issues. Now with a replacement mobo nothing is working.

Here are the stats, just in case:

AMD TBird 1.4GHz (not overclocked)
512MB Crucial DDR RAM
Enermax 350W PSU
Matrox Millenium G450
IBM Deskstar GXP 75

i know you dont' have much hardware currently installed, but try removing all non-essential hardware from the motherboard and then start the machine up. it might actually POST. I had a similar problem on my athlon 950 rig which was running perfectly until I installed a new CD burner. It just didnt boot or even POST at all. I wound up removing my sound card and then it worked fine (i was able to reinstall the soudn card by switching PCI slots, but you get the idea).

so maybe just leave in the ram, cpu and video card, no floppy, no cd-rom. maybe it'll POST? i'll bet your CPU isn't dead. If it does POST, then pop in the hard drive and try to boot up. if it works, then shut down and add another piece of hardware. that'll help you narrow down the problem hardware. Or maybe try less or different RAM?

good luck

Thanks, appreciate your ideas. Will try them as I get a chance. At least tomorrow I'll be able to call ASUS and AMD to get their respective points of view on this. I have a certain idea already what I am gonna hear. I expect ASUS will blame the CPU will AMD will blame the motherboard. But who knows, there might be a surprise in store.

Are you getting any beeps? It sounds like it could possibly be a video issue, but I cannot really tell since I don't know if there are beeps. Also, have you reset the cmos, because usually motherboards ship with it in the reset position in which case you'll get nothing. Try that and check back.

There has not been a single beep. At first I thought it might be the speaker but I checked that but no, not a single beep.

I reset the CMOS, meaning: I took out the battery and shorted the solders. Since I could not get into the BIOS don't know what settings are in there but I assume it would be the factory default.

This situation is really stupid. To my knowledge (which admittedly is not the best when it comes to these kinds of things) I can't determine which of the two, the mobo or the CPU is dead.

You will have to come up with a way to verify your CPU is not dead. Otherwise every single mobo you received from RMA will just be that RMA'd!

I will call AMD later today and see what they suggest.
I don't have any CPUs laying around, so I can't just put another one in. CompUSA seems not to sell any CPUs either, nor does BestBuy. This does not make it easier.
