CPU dead?

I've got an A64 3000+ winnie on a Neo2 board, and the system just stopped working. I was playing q3 online, went to specs and left my machine for maybe 10 mins. When I returned my monitor was black, system was running but not responding. After trying several things I remembered the D-Bracket thingy and plugged it in. On startup the lights stick with 1 and 4 red, which is processor initialization.... 🙁

In case your wondering, yes it was overclocked, but only to 2Ghz. I used to run it at 2.5 over last winter, but set it back to stock speeds a while back (8-9 mos?) and have only been running it at 2.0 for a few days. I did try to clear BIOS with no luck.

Is there anything I should try before I give up on this thing? If I'm going to have to buy a new chip I'll be looking for the best price/performance chip, not just the cheapest or fastest. Any suggestions on what to get?
 
Any chance you've got a nearby friend with an A64 rig?
That's the best way to tell if it's dead or not.

If you need a replacement, I saw today that Ewiz.com had a 3200+ Venice E6 for $139, which is an outstanding price. Sometimes you're even hardpressed to find 3000+s cheaper.

Sorry, OEM chip, if that matters. Your HSF is reusable, though, so there shouldn't be any issue.
 
OEM is fine, I have an XP90 on it now. Unfortunately I don't know anyone with an A64 rig.... everybody I know owns Dell's... :roll:

How are the Venice chips? I haven't been paying attention lately but I remember when they first came out the were'nt the best O/C'ers, although that's not terribly important at the moment...hehe.

I'm gonna go scour fleabay and see what I can dig up there....
 
Before buying a new processor, take out all but 1 stick of ram, one hd, no opticals, etc. Strip your system down and see if it posts. I would try another PSU, different sticks of ram, different video card, etc. Since you can't really rule out the cpu (no friends w/ em to try), you should try to rule out as many other things as possible first. Post back with your results.
 
The Venice chips are pretty decent OC'ers. A 3000/3200/3500+ typically hit around 2.5-2.6, so about the same as a decent Winchester. I hope you're able to figure out what went wrong.
 
Yeah smthmlk, that was gonna be my next direction.... was even thinking of removing everything from the case just to rule out a short. I have an OCZ 520 PSU, I can't imagine that being bad, I have another vid-card that I can try too. I'll keep this updated...


Update: Well I got 'er back up and running, appearently it was the video card. I wish I would've tried that before I stripped my case out...LOL but at least I made some progress. I'm going to try that card out in another machine just to make sure... thanks for the replies guys!
