Who knows what's actually wrong with it...could be the motherboard, memory, cpu, psu, anything. You'll have to find out for yourself.

Taking your brother at his word though, chances are if the mobo is dead, the CPU is fine.

In the last 15 years, probably 15 dead motherboards, only 2 bad cpu's and those were both Athlon XP's

could be a bunch of things without even testing the eq.

Your brother is probably giving u a short and generic answer, because it wont post.
Did he test all the other components out b4 giving you an offical answer?

When testing a machine that doesnt post, you need to check the ram, psu, cpu, gpu, and board.

One of those not working, will lead to the board not posting.

If you dont have the extra hardware, or have any additional hardware you can test, your best choice is taking it down to a store, and having them check out what is gone and what isnt.

:this belongs in general hardware... not cpu and overclocking...

I did say to him a few weeks ago about how much strain he was putting on a very cheap mobo

Sorry, forgot to say, he took it down to a computer repair shop and was told it was a mobo issue. It makes sence since the gpu is on the mobo and he played World Of Warcraft between 6-8 hours(sometimes more) a day for about 1 1/2 years!

If they checked it, then im sure its just the board.

Otherwise they would of told him, its more.

Just swap the board with another that has a built in IGP, and you should be cake.

For LGA775, the nvidia matx boards with onboard 9300 would be a nice upgrade over intel GMA.
