CPU Cooler vs. mobo temp

I just replaced my P4 stock HSF with a Zalman CNPS7000A-CU. Although my idle temperature went up a few degrees, my load temperature is down a few degrees (and this is with a fan speed of 1,700 vs. 3,500 at load with my stock HSF). BUT I noticed that my motherboard temperature (Asus P4S800D-E) went up abou 8 degrees F at idle and about 5 degrees F at load.

I can see that the new CPU HS comes really close to the motherboard bridge (I forget if it's north or south) HS, but they don't touch. Maybe the proximity and heat from the CPU HS is causing the HS on the motherboard to be hotter? Or maybe where the motherboard temperature is monitored is closer now to the CPU HS (it's fairly big) and/or the CPU HS absorbs and gives off more heat?

Any thoughts? (I'm getting 104 degrees F at idle and about 108 degrees F at load on the motherboard - those don't seem too bad, so maybe I shouldn't worry... just very curious.)

Thanks.

well with a better HS on the cpu it would make sense for it to absorb/give off more heat... thats its job ;)

so i would assume its a good possibility that it is raising the mobo temp some. also depending on which type of thermal grease you applied, the grease may not be working at peak efficiency yet and contributing to the problem. i know that artic silver 5 is supposed to take 50-150 hours to 'bake' and reach its fullest potential. that could be your problem as well.

Yeah, I used Artic Silver 5... I'll give it a week or so and see. If my temps don't drop some, should I consider removing the HSF, cleaning up, and trying another application of AS5?

If your temps don't come down in a week or so, then I'd remove the H/S and clean it up and reapply with a very thin layer of Artic silver 5....even at full load I've never gone above 36C ! (we'll see what happens to that statement in the summer...lol) AS5 does have a break-in period after which you should see the temps lower and stabalize....good luck
