CPU Cooler Recommendation for a Soc939 Processor

So I have a 3500+ and an MSI NF3 board ordered and in transit.

I already have a Zalman 7000 Copper cooler, but I would rather have something high performance that doesn't require me to take the original backplate off the motherboard.

There doesn't seem to be too much out there to choose from, what should I get. I am assuming I will be doing some mild overclocking.

Thanks

I would recommend the Gigabyte 3D Cooler Ultra GT. It's a 780g copper monster with rpm regulation panel, 4 nice blue LEDs (if you have a case with window, it's a nice feature) and good performance. Definitely a viable alternative to your Zalman.

I'd try the Thermaltake Venus 12 or Silent Boost....they are both pretty similar, but the Venus' fan speed is adjustable. They both use the stock retention system and won't require using a backplate.

At 780 grams I would sure hope the Gigabyte has some kind of backplate...which would defeat the purpose of getting a new HSF.

I have been pleased with my Alpha PAL8150T paired with a YS_Tech adjustable 80mm fan. At 2.4ghz and 1.68v I am about 10-12C cooler than the OEM cpu heatsink at the same speed.

The Gigabyte has no backplate but its retention mechanism is very solid. Just look HERE. It comes with high quality thermal compound as well. The good thing about it is that you can reach a nice compromise between cooling efficiency and noise level.

The SilentBoost K8 is far less effective in terms of cooling but relatively quiet. Venus is actually a bit similar to Gigabyte - efficient but loud at high rpms.

thanks for the suggestions guys,

I just ordered the Thermaltake Venus 12. It will suffice I am sure.
