CPU Cooler for 4770k?

It's time to overclock my 4770k instead of upgrading it. I have read through this thread for some ideas, but wanted to see what the current consensus is about a cooler for the i7 4770k. Right now I'm using the stock cooler, which is fine, but I do game quite a bit and I'd also like to get it up and running some Distributed Computing projects as well.

The thread isn't that old, but I wanted to make sure that the information was still relevant. I'd like to keep my budget below $100 and also have a size constraint, as I'm using the Silverstone Grandia GD08 case, which limits my CPU cooler height to 138mm according to Silverstone's specs.

My question is: what would be the best current option for cooling this CPU? My main concern would be performance followed by noise output. I don't want it to be crazy loud though, but if I'm gaming and it makes a little noise, I don't care.

Here are the system specs if it matters at all (or if any overclocking gurus care to offer advice):

Asus z87 pro LGA 1150
16GB Corsair RAM - I'll check the specs when I'm home
i7 4770k stock cooler
Corsair HX 750 PSU
eVGA 1070ti
SSD's storage drives, etc.
4x 120mm fans on the bottom and side of the case

Update here: I ended up going with the Noctua NH-C14S. It's amazing.

It fit well in this case and had no motherboard/RAM or PCI-E slot issues.

I did have to run it in "low profile" mode with the fan on the bottom (how it comes shipped), since there's not enough space on the top to run the fan there with the case closed.

Running AIDA64 and I don't get over 63c as a constant temp with one spike up to 69c.

I'm excited to see where I can take this with overclocking.
 
I have a NH-D15 on my 4770k, but I also have a case that fits into without issues (Fractal Design Define R3). I am glad you managed to fit the NH-C14S and get it to work with your case's airflow. I have had my 4770k running at 4.4GHz rock solid stable for years now (I had it up to 4.6GHz, but backed it off as it really needed a voltage bump to run at that speed and I didn't want to run higher than 1.2V which mine manages at 4.4GHz (supposely really good since most don't make it past 4.2 at 1.2V)).

I would not spend to much on an a 4770K, if I were you I would just grab an Hyper 212 Evo. Cheap, and way better than stock HSF. I had a 4970K @4.6 with one.

why the NHC14S will fit any lga115x board, and its a solid heat sink.
Ontop its board facing so it doubles at cooling the mosfets if he ever decides to upgrade platforms on the Z370 and a 9900k.

And its a heck of a lot better heat sink then a evo 212.

Infact my C14s with mount upgrades which you can buy has gone with me from a i7-860S all the way up to a i9-9900k on my brothers machine.

He wants to overclock to get more life out of his current setup, and there would be an insignificant difference in overclocking results by spending double for the Noctua, its just not a great value for a 4770K.

Trust me, I agree with you that Noctua is far superior, but in this particular case, the $35 212 would fit the bill, and is woefully better than the stock HSF.

Thanks for the reply, however that cooler is 158.5 mm tall. Per my OP, it won't fit my case. I have 138 mm max in the Grandia GD08.

I already bought and installed the Noctua. It fits, it cools incredibly well and it will work when I upgrade platforms.
