CPU Cooler Fan orientation AM3 v S775

I'm considering a new AM3 or s775 build.
The clips on the motherboard CPU heatsink retention bracket are north/south on an AM3 and east/west on a socket 775.
On AM3 this means that hot exhaust air from the CPU is dumped onto the gfx card or the fan is blowing in rising hot air from the gfx card onto the CPU. This situation isn't so bad if there is a blowhole at the top of the case.
On socket 775, the clips are positioned east/west, meaning the fan has also to face east/west. However, the fan can pull in relatively cool air from the front of the case and hot air from CPU and to lesser extent the gfx card can be drawn out the back of the case. This would appear to cool better than the AM3 scenario.

So, disregarding price + performance etc., does an AM3 or s775 heatsink/fan provide better cooling?
Is there an AM3 aftermarket CPU cooler available that allows east/west fan orientation as I do prefer the AM3?

I have a Cooler Master Hyper 212 Plus which uses a multisocket compatible backplate allowing you to install the cooler ONLY in EAST/WEST position on AM2-AM3 motherboards and any position on 775. It's also compatible with 1366 and 1156. You'll want to buy another fan with it tho, as the stock one aint that great.
