I have read of some cooler burning out the fan headers on a motherboard. Do you guys/ladies suggest that I use an adapter to connect my cooler directly to the power supply or do you think it is safe using the fan header on the mobo?

I plan on using a SK6 with a Delta on a Dragon+ motherboard.

On another system I'm gonna be using a Volcano 6cu with a 7200rpm fan.

It's safer to connect it to the PS using the adapter. The potential for burning out the header with a high RPM fan is real and can be expensive as well.

Do both. Places like directron.com have adaptors that split the rpm signal and the power lines. That way you can draw power off the PS and still get tach readings. Or make one yourself. I use them to take as much load off the motherboard as possible.

<< Have a high-RPM (CFM) fan with a 3-pin connector to mobo, but concerned that it may draw too much power from your mobo? No problem! This device will allow you to run a fan or cooler with three-pin molex connector off your power supply while still sending the sensing information to the motherboard. >>
