cpu choices, i am underknowledged

i have decided on an asus P5nd2-SLI sli edition for the motherboard, but i am clueless as to the type of CPU to use. I do not need dual core, but I am pretty clueless as to the other options available. I am thinking of around a 3.4ghz or so, maybe with HT. what's the processor name to look for for a single core? Probably from 70-150 bucks. Any help you can give would be helpful

Get a pentium-4 then, but you probably aren't gonna get a 3.4 for $150. Make sure to get a 6xx(2mb cache prescott) series, or even better a 6x1 series(cedar mill, 65nm, runs much much cooler).

I've got some ideas, but it means using an AMD processor. For the most part, until Conroe is released, you'll get more bang for your buck with AMD. Here are a few processor ideas that will fit your budget. All are s939's as opposed to AM2. AM2 is a very new platform so all the "bugs" with the boards may not be worked out yet. However, feel free to substitute any of the s939's for its AM2 flavor if thats the route you want to go.

Wasted post, stevty2889. Only a really green noob would try to put an AMD proc in a Pentium mother board.

The op doesn't strike me as being ignorant. I think he already knew without being told that if he were to go AMD, he would need to pick a different board. The choice is his, but until Conroe is out and readily available, AMD is still the way to go.

OP- Are you sure you want that motherboard, it's a great design but it's also very expensive. Doesn't sound like you're overclocking, SLI is rarely a good upgrade path and other than that you might as well get a board that's half the price.

First, what do you do with the computer, and what is the budget ? AMD may very well be the way to go, as for single core, they are certainly the best bang/back ATM.
