I am switching back to AMD and need to know which is the better choice, the 754pin or 939pin socket. Also can anyone suggest a motherboard to go with either cpu. Thanks

i would go 939 and if you have to wait for a board with pcie and maybe sli
this will ensure that your board will have a longer lifespan and keep a smile on yur face for as much as a year or two :)
then pick up some good memory and whichever processor (.09u preferably) fits your budget

754 only seems good if you are on a budget, still beats out socketA and gives P4 478's a run for there money

I'd only go 754 if you can REALLY only spend enough for a 2800+. As for the 3000 and 3200, the price difference is now under $10, and the upgrade path is way better on 939, and the performance is better, too. If you can wait, nForce4 will be available in like a week or so, and that gives you PCIe and a whole bunch of other new goodies. That also lets you buy the 6600GT, the best sub-$200 card ever offered.

754: epox 8kda3j
939: K8NS Ultra

I use both boards and have had no problems with either. I know of one person who couldn't get over 240 or so HTT on the K8NS though, so maybe the MSI is a better choice there.

You are looking at ~$40 difference in boards and maybe $30 difference in cpu's. There is undoubtably a performance edge in 939 winchester over 754 newcastle, but it's up to you if the 3-8% difference in benches (from what I hear) is worth $70.

i'm going to go with the skt754 because of the price and speed. As Zebo stated, the 3400+ newcastle is faster overall than the 3500+ newcastle (just barely i can imagine). The dual channel and longitivity help, but the $60-70 isnt worth it. I can get the 3400+ newcastle for $222 at newegg, and the 3500+ newcastle for $273. That isn't worth it for me. Besides, if i get a new processor i can just use the money i saved to get a decent mobo with possibly SLI. I've i'm going to improve 1 thing then i might as well do some others. I have about a $1000-1100 budget, and i'm down to $1170. If i start adding all that stuff i'll probably be up to about $1300! Like i said, not worth it...

I am waiting on the PCIE boards to come out, so I guess it will have to be the 939 pin. But the more I think about it I might change my mind because I just laid down a bunch of money for a new video card which is AGP. I might have to leave my rig as it is and just build a new one the way I want it with the 3500 newcastle.
