CPU Choice for Photo Editing

I have started using Photoshop CS recently and find that my machine is very slow when i manipulate photos.

I have a four year old Athlon 1.2Ghz machine with 512 MB RAM.
My machine just sleeps when i want to edit these huge panaromas I make (Upwards of 250MB files, It takes around half an hour to apply one filter!)

I was trying to decide which CPU is best for Photoshop and then go with it.

Any suggesstions. Also any suggesstions on what amount of memory I would need to process these huge files?

Does Dual core make sense or is it better to go with higherspeed single core - or better yet does any body know if Photoshop CS uses threads?

What GPU is good? Or does Photoshop use any GPU power for any processing?

I am planning to build my own computer and based on imperfect knowledge, I was going to go with the following configuration. Please comment freely.

AMD Athlon 4400+ (Going with the cheapest dual core 1 MB cache solution assuming cache is needed for photoshop and dual core would be used in photoshop to make my computer come back quicker or atleast allow me to do something other than stare at my monitor!)

2GB RAM (Looking at OCZ Platinum series 2x1GB sticks so that i can get 1T timings - Assuming memory latency important to boost photoshop performance)

2x74GB Raptors in Raid 0 to speed up the cache drive (also would be the primaty boot partition, Assuming cache speed boost will be better for photoshop when editing these huge files)

DFI LANPARTY UT ULTRA MOBO
Zalman 7000 ALCU
Antec P180 Case
Antec True Power 2.0 550Watt
Either Nvidia 6200 or Nvidia 6600GT (Based on what you folks say about the use of the GPU for photoshop). I do play some games but it is strictly noob level.
1 Western Digital 250GB caviar Raid Edition (For safe storage, assuming drive to be better than the standard edition and then maybe later add another drive in raid 1 configuration.)

Everything looks good except for the Raptors. Waste of money. You see almost no speed increase with them, and there's a HUGE risk of instability. Get the 6600GT as well. Everything else looks great, but the DFI board may be a bit daunting if you're new to the PC-building scene. I would go with the EPoX 9NPA+ Ultra. 🙂
