cpu/chipset requirements

Hello everyone,

Great Forum. I see alot of knowledge here and I am new to this kind of stuff. So here is my situation- I just upgraded an old PC by replacing the P2 333MHZ CPU with a P2 450 MHZ. Now, at start up the Processor speed is shown as 300MHZ processor (used to be 333) The MB has a i440LX chipset. Is this lower cpu speed because of the chipset? Is the i440BX required to get 450MHZ? I realize the bus speed for the LX is slower 66 vs 100. Is there a way to make this combination work at 450? If so, will some one please refer me to some documentation about how to make it happen? I have not been able to identify the MB manufacturer. At start up "i440LX-P6LX-A-00" and "P6LXver2.2b 10/24/1997" are shown. It has an award BIOS chip and there is a stamp on the MB that says TB5 if that helps.

Thanks,
TS

It would seem the i440LX is a 66mhz only board, which would be why the cpu is showing as 300mhz.

You are right in saying that an i440BX would be ok as it would support your 100mhz fsb P2 450.

did a search for i440lx and i found that its a 66fsb only chipset.

all 333mhz(100fsb) and up p2's are hard locked, so you cant overclock.

Actually, the 333's made the first 1/2 of the year were unlocked. They got locked after August. I built a couple of 333 @ 412 (4 x 103) rigs back in the day! You could not go above the 5x multiplier, but could go lower.

Thanks everyone. What's locked, the cpu or the chipset? I replaced the 333 with a 450 and the speed dropped from 333 to 300. Seems weird. 66.666 X 5 is 333 mhz So even if the multiplier is locked at 5 I should still be able to get 333 not 300.

You put in a PII 450 which is 4.5 x 100 into an LX mobo which runs it @ 4.5 x 66 = 300.
