CPU bottleneck

The only think your CPU would remotely bottleneck is an SLI/CF setup. A 2.9GHz Opty is plenty fast for most things still.

The OP didn't mention games (although that might be his intent), so it's worth mentioning other CPU operations. Raw number crunching is usually CPU limited i.e. the CPU is the bottleneck. For memory intensive apps, NetBurst CPUs are often bandwidth limited, whereas the better memory substructure of A64-based CPUs might allow them to overcome this and reach a CPU bottleneck.

The bottleneck is simply the slowest part of your system. You will always have a bottleneck. You could buy the fastest processor out there, but then the bottleneck would just shift to some other component (RAM, video card, etc.). The trick is to balance things so that they are all running as close to full capacity as possible. No one can say what CPU you need to balance things without knowing the rest of your system. From the looks of your signature I would say it's not something you should be worried about.

What about disk I/O? Surely that is the biggest bottleneck in any system. No amount of cpu power is going to make that any faster.

Yea,, but that cost 500 dollars to fix, and all u gain is 5 secs in loading time..
