CPU architecture and GHZ performance?

Curiously how do cpu's of today compare with those of a few years ago at similiar speeds both in real-word and synthetic environments?

For instance my old desktop athlon XP 1800+ @1.53 Ghz versus a core solo at the same clock speed?
