Alright, I wont go through the entire year and a half history of my computers problems ever since I bought it...

Basically its a:
AMD Thunderbird 1.2ghz @1124 (or something)
GeForce Ti 4200 128 mb VIVO
256 mb pc133 ram
30+40gig 7200 rpm hd's
AK73 Pro Motherboard from A-open
cd rom and cd-rw drive...
an extra usb expander port...

So, its an alright machine, but it always overheats, and has frequently the last 8 months or so...

I have isolated the problem, the cpu overheats too much, and I used to have another 256mb ram
chip but that kept overheating too right after I bought it, so basically, I am wondering what to do...

I have underclocked the cpu, but it still freezes now aftr working ok for like 3 days... Do I get a new
cpu fan? and if so, which one for my socket chip and motherboard? I have a 300w psu...

I would like to get a new box, psu, cpu, motherboard, and ram, and just make two computers with the
new one having my vid card and one cd rom and 40 gig hd, and just give the old machine my geforce2
and dont make it play any hard games (it always freezes in warcraft 3 in the menu) it freezes during
things like 3dmark2003, and sometimes 2001se, it also freezes in other games....

Anyway, should I just get a new fan, and clock my fan back up to 1.2, or I am looking at getting the
AK77 from A-open board, a new cpu for now, and fan...

Thanks, if you have a different solution, i would love to hear it...

Dude, if you're underclocking your CPU just to keep it running, you've got more than the "New fan blues".

All that info. and you didn't tell us what heatsink/fan combo you're using right now. Sounds like it may not be installed right. Also what case is all this housed in?

I'd get the T-bird running correctly before moving onto another MB/CPU combo. :Q

alright, regardless, I still would like maybe a few names of fans I should try to get,

I will have an opportunity to go to www.canadacomputers.com at their store this
weekend maybe, and I was looking at the Tornado 7 but I wasnt sure...

You need to fix the problems you have before you start buying new stuff. It would just be a waste of money if you didn't. In order to help you, we need more info.

Are you using the Coolermaster heatsink and fan that came with the CPU? Your CPU should not overheat if you have the heatsink installed properly and fan connected to the motherboard. (I think it's possible to put the heatsink on backwards, so check for that.) Also, check to see if you BIOS is set to shut down the computer if a certain temperature is reached. If it is set to low, it could be causing some of your problems.

Do you have you video card overclocked? Your video card can also freeze your system if it overheats. Is the heatsink on the video card making good contact with the GPU?

How did you install the heatsinkon your CPU? Did you use the thermal pad or do you have some aftermarket thermal compound (like Artic Silver.)?

Answering these questions will help us help you.

You must really like Aopen. I like them too. Check to see how much cable clutter you have in your system, check your voltages and fan speeds. What type of heatsink and fan you running?
