What is it for? Gaming? What games and at what resolution?

If you're planning on gaming at high resolutions, go with the AMD + 7950GX2 combo, if you're looking to do gaming at a sub-1600x1200 resolution, and also will be multi-tasking with video encoding, capturing, extracting archives, and of the sort, go with the E6400 + 7900GT combo.

Yep, that's not high res 😉

I'm confused as to how those prices compare, the 7950GX2 is around twice the price of a 7900GT after all. You might want to consider a X1900XT or 7900GTX as a mid point with a 6300.

While 16x10 isn't exactly "high-res", it is a resolution that will not see near as much benefit from a faster CPU as it will from a faster GPU.

Most sites do not benchmark at that specific resolution, so we'll use 16x12 as the closest one. Here's a few examples:

HL2 Lost Coast 1600x1200 4xAA 8xAF
The difference between an x6800 ($1000) and the 4600+ ($250) is about 5%.

HL2 Lost Coast 1600x1200 4xAA 16xAF
The difference between a GX2 ($550) and a GT ($280) is 79%.

Other games, such as FEAR (CPU and GPU), Quake 4 (CPU and GPU), Call of Duty 2 (CPU and GPU), all show the exact same results.

I didn't stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night or anything, but I can see where your money is best spent-- the best GPU solution you can afford.

LOL. Agreed - if you're a gamer, focus on getting a good GPU.
