CPU and Dell

I recently bought a new videocard, and seeing as my computer is a couple years old, that also means I need to upgrade my 250w PSU to something a little more powerful. Here's the problem: I asked around for advice on what PSU to get (as I'm sort of a novice at the whole upgrading thing), and I was informed that Dell likes to use proprietary hardware so "bad things" happen to your computer when you try to upgrade with something other than Dell hardware. So, I've done some searching and found very conflicting information on whether or not my computer (Dimension 4600) is one of these. Of course, Dell was no help. Apparently my question of, "Can I install a non-Dell PSU in my computer?" was regarded as an emergency, and that I should use their chat...

Well, any advice, suggestions, or answers would be greatly appreciated before I go and blow up my computer. I know there are Dell-to-ATX converters I can buy, but I'm wondering if that's even necessary.

Thanks in advance for the help!

There are numerous discussions in the Dell forums about what PSUs fit in the 4600. You should have no issues upgrading it.
