cpu and artic silver troubles

I used artic silver 3 on two cpus and got some on parts other than the core and thought nothing of it, and when my computer told me my cpu problems, I came up with the conclusion that this has got to be the fault, but is there anyway to get the cpus to still work, are they permanently damaged because i heard that it might mess up parts of the cpu if too much thermal compound is applied, is there any good solution to cleaning it. Ive already ordered another cpu so its not something i have to really worry about, but i really wanna know if i should just throw these away or maybe i can give one to a friend i know who wants to update their computer. Btw, the mobo is a asus a7v8x, the cpus were both 1.4ghz athlons (not xp).

where do u get isopropyl at? and exactly what is it, i remember the name from chemistry, probably a dumb question
 
so is a short on it something i can fix or are the cpus useless
btw im applying the rubbing alchol right after i post this
 
After you clean off the cpu with alcohol or soap and water, you must let it dry thoroughly. Leave it sitting for 20-30 minutes to be safe, or you may fry it. I use an old toothbrush.
 
AS is non electrically conductive unless it is under great pressure. I've had setups where AS had gotten all over everything, and all worked fine.
I don't however, suggest being sloppy with AS, as it is messy stuff.
 
isopropyl alcohol is teh shiznit. great for cleaning the core of a cpu. but for the ceramic i prefer to get a technical eraser like the one they have on the pentel mechanincal pencils, the high quality white synthetic rubber stuff and erase the AS3 off the ceramic, it literally pick the AS3 off the ceramic. Then I wip the whole thing down with isopropyl alcohol.
 
Alright, thanks for all the suggestions, I'll try using an eraser and the alcohol on it later because I got to go to work soon.

Remember look for the high quality technical erasers, they're usually white and some are made by pentel and sanford. Pink eraser if not the best.
 
Well... I dont know what to say, Im having some serious problems somewhere when installing because I just got my new processor today and i still get the same problem, maybe all the cpus really work, but im going nuts trying to find out, I need help with this, I'm gonna make another post, im desperate. I've bought new ram, motherboard, cpu, thermal greece (duh?) and the only thing i havent changed is my case, which could be next... plz feel free to suggest any solutions at my new post Here
 
I find that I can't clean arctic silver off the green part of the CPU (on an athlonXP, and not the die) very well with alcohol, but acetone (nailpolish remover) does it quite well. Not sure about ceramic.
 
Are you getting CPU error messages on bootup (ie. invalid clock setting)?? You probably just need to select your CPU default specs from the bios.
