cpu @ 100%... changed OS, reformat, checked boot..all failed

Remember that Gateway 6400 Server that was hot a few years ago on the Hot Deals forum? Well, that machine is starting to piss me off.

Its been running at 100% CPU Usage. I went from XP to 2000 and it still does the same thing. I've reformated it 3 times. I've used Norton to check the boot sectors. Still runs at 100%. I tried to do a low level reformat, but IBM's utility won't run properly because it can't find command.com.

Is this possibly a hardware problem? IF so, please let me know any ideas on what it is and how i can fix it.

Thanks in advance.

Have you read thru this thread?

What does the task manager show as far as processes and mem usage?

Everything under processes looks fine, except this:

System..........................94%-99%
[its usually the 2nd to last item under proccesses]

Mem usage is minimal and stable.

I can't view that thread because it says i'm not a subscriber. Whatever that means.

tip: when clicking a subscriber link and you aren't one, change subscriber to forums. Sorry for not changing it the first time.

run msconfig and kill non MS services and startup items, then reboot. What happens now when viewing the task mgr?

i'll have to peruse that thread, its quite big.

as far as msconfig... I looked into it, and there is nothing non-MS. However, I think I forgot to mention that I am getting this abnormal CPU usuage on a raw OS install, I mean that the very second after wink2k or winXP had finished installing, I would check the Task Manager only to find that its already running at 100%.

Does that help any? or am I confusing you.

btw, thanks for the replies and help so far...you're pretty fast.

EDIT: Just ran it under "Diagnostic Startup" (aka "Safe Mode")... still runs at 100%

tdas2,

You are awesome. I turned that off. Re-installed win2k and CPU usage is back to normal.(going to swtich it over to XP now)

However, can you tell me what ACPI is and what negative effects will i get from disabling it?

Thanks again!
