I need to get internet service for my new place and it is already wired for Cox, but when I go to the Cox website to order an internet package it automatically adds a $50 "Professional Installation" charge. This charge seems like BS to me since the place is already fricking wired for Cox so I asked the internet chat support how to change it to self-install to lower the fee, but he tells me professional installation is required for my address because they need to install filters and check wires. Is this BS or is it legit?

Are you a professional filter installer and wire checker? No? That's why you have to pay.
What if the signal would be low from your wiring, who would know that, you?

I didn't wire anything. Cox has already been out to wire the house for the previous tenant...

Edit: If nothing was already installed I would have no issue with the fee.

I can professionally install some Cox for you. ;)

In all seriousness, it's probably legit. Unfortunately for you, you have no easy way to find out, and if you want their service you'll have to pay.

Suddenlink also started charging for installation. It's just another bullshit fee to make more money. They will probably hook up your equipment, call in the modem address, run a speedtest and leave. This is something you can do. The only reason they would need to be there is if you have a problem. $50 easy money.

That is how I am interpreting this too. I can easily call in my modem address and plug it into the existing "Cox port" no problem. I will have to give them a call to talk more about getting this waived.

Call in and threaten to cancel your service :p

When I got my hooked up with Suddenlink they wouldn't wave the fee :(. I really hate paying for something I can do myself and would have been more than happy paying the fee if I ran into a problem.

Definitely worth a call to see if you can have them drop it. The only reason they might really need to send someone out is if you get the new 300mb package, which requires new wiring. That's one of the reasons I didn't get that package and stuck with the measly 100mb package. Plus I would need a new modem.

Does the professional installation include new wiring if your place didn't have wiring? Make them earn their $50.

When I originally got my Time Warner cable I was pissed that I had to pay their $40 install fee.

When the guy got to my house, he inspected everything and told me the last person did a horribly shoddy job and had like 6 splitters on the line. He redid all of the wiring for me.

What they said, call in and go all the way through the signup process and pretend not to hear the installation fee. When you get to the end and are ready to close the deal go over the charges one last time. When they say the install fee threaten to cancel the entire order. You wouldn't believe the free shit they throw at you when your already a customer and call to cancel so I would reckon they do it to get new customers too.

All of their install/tech people are contracted now and the fees is how they pay them. You should be able to go into a store or order a self install kit on line. If you have to have someone come out, you aren't going to get by without paying the fee.

The problem is that I don't want them to go around drilling shit because then I have to call the landlord out there.

Yeah on their residential site they list a self-install option (still $20 lol) but it does not let me select an option when I purchase online.

If you're buying internet but not TV they might want to install filters to block clear QAM and any other TV signals.

The poor schmucks that come to your door do earn their money. I was talking to an installer here in the bay area, he gets $19 for showing up, less than $5 for hooking up a cable box. I forget the other numbers, but they were all very low. That's a group of fellows that need a union.
