Cox High Speed Internet versus Verizon FIOS

I live in Fairfax County, VA. My COX Internet connection (15x2) has speeds in the evening at less than 2 Mbps on the download and 800 kbps in the evening. Use speakeasy.net for the speeds. At 5:30 am, I get speeds of 20 Mbps on the download. Had this same problem in December 2005. lasted two months,. Cox said I was getting the speed I was paying for but a week later miraculously the problem was solved. Seems the card at the node was being shared by someone else that was paying for the 5 Mbps. Cox sends out a tech on Monday who says gamers Iare taking the bandwidth when I have told Cox the problem is at the node.

Questions:

1. Has anyone had this same problem with Cox where they refuse to help you?
2. Is Verizon FIOS any better?

EdfromCocoa, Cox's support is friendly, but useless. There is a set of things they know how to fix (mostly full-on outages) and that's about it. You will have to ride them for a long time and deal with a lot of frustration to get a fix. And that automated support system is sooooo annoying.

FIOS is a lot better. For now.

I have Charter Cable.

The problem with cable is you share with people around you it fluxates a bit. My isp also is pretty expensive I pay like $35 for 3mbps/256kbps

I would so get Verizion FIOS if I were you I've been wanting it but it's not in my area you can get 5mbps/2mbps for $35

I've also had a bunch of stupid problems with charter when it gets late I've been gettting high latency in servers I usually ping about 10-20 that are located in LA at idk 8-10 it gets higher and higher until I can barely play because I have 100 more ping than i should. The werd thing is that I ping well in central and east servers this is because it's taking a different route. Charter btw is a terrible company i've always had problems with them there internet, phone and digital TV

first slow internet high latency consistantly i've had this problem before they fixed it now it's back :(
my phone was using too much bandwith and made my HD pixelate so they had to put a like limiter on the coax so the phone had less but now when people call on the phone sometimes my phone makes this annoying sound before
than comes the digital tv I have an HDTV btw the guide menu doesn't fill my tv it stays in standard so I have black bars on the side therfore i see less than I should be able to. my on demand hbo, showtime, cinemax, and such doesn't let me play sometimes it almost never works and when I want to watch entourage, or weeds I want it to work.

charter also has ****** support they open a "ticket" and that is all nothing more they can't help you than after sending about 3 ping and trace routes thru e-mail they finally decide there is a problem.

I am switching to verizion completely when it becomes available. ( Internet, Phone, and Digital TV )

You can't blame your ISP for latency issues, unless it's still inside their network. As soon as you hit the internet, all bets are off. What if hte problem was a Verizon server that was having hardware issues, should Cox/Charter/AT&T fix that?

I have charter, they pretty much suck.

They offer pretty avg download speeds and what I consider criminal upload speeds.
We had the same upload speed in 1998 on Qwest DSL.

Lets move along already Charter and get with the times, 1Mbps up would be nice.

Trust me it's there fault they can't get a dam thing right worst company i've ever had to deal with it's either this or verizion dsl which I really don't want

I also agree with Genx87 the upload speeds suck my download speed is decent but the upload speed is low you'd think they would have higher upload speeds. They actually do have a faster connection it's 10megabit download and 1megabit upload again the proportion there is terrible so lets say you even decide okay w/e I can deal with it than you have to pay $69.99!

Bandwidth...

coaxial = 45mb max (theoretical)
fiber to the home = virtually unlimited but currently 155mb (limited by the speed of the switches)

Cox has many limits as verizon FIOS does not. FIOS is "light" years ahead of cox in many ways. Some people just have no idea.

so you expect Cox to fix problems with others routing gear? They have no control once a packet leaves their network. No control, and no responsibility.

What do you need all that upload speed for? Commercial applications that require uplaod speed pay fro the dedicated service. Home users who don't torrent/run servers don't need much more then 512 Kb/s up (imho). I do lots of stuff (no torrents though) and do fine with my wireless at 1.5 down, 4-600 up. Including remoting into machines at work, surfing the web, etc.

I have 256 Kb/s up....

I am saying they are backing up there nodes like last time putting to many people on one node and lagging me again. They've done it before

andrewbabcock i had to call and they said it was in my area but it is rather expensive $69.99 a month.
