Cox High Speed Internet Issue?

So get this.....I am out of state for the next couple months for work. I have a apartment with Cox high speed internet. I been using it for the past 2 days without any problems. I come home today and i cant get on the internet. I did all the usual things: restart the comp, release/renew lease.

So i go to the apartment office and tell them I have a problem with the internet and they gave me a number to call for tech support. I call Cox and the guy basically walks me through everything I did myself....aside from pinging a couple IP #s I wasnt familar with.

About 20 mins of doing this I am still unable to get on the internet and he puts me on hold. He then comes back and says my IP address and MAC address have been blocked because of "viruses" on my computer. I told him I had up to date virus protection software and didnt think I had any. He then told me to run my virus scan again and call back and they could unblock it.

So I run a full scan and nothing pops up. I call back and speak to someone else and the guy cant find any trouble tickets from my apartment. He couldnt tell me much and couldnt find any way to help me get back on the net.

Finally, I just manually changed my IP address and now I'm back on the internet. Now my question is can a cable provider just block access because you have a virus? That just sounds absurd.

If you're compromising other computers, absolutely. Hell, if you're using massive amounts of bandwidth because of said problem, they'll cut you too. If you've been RA'd and are distributing spam, they'll cut you off again.

Basically, they can do whatever the hell they want. Read your TOS and they typically have a ridiculous catch-all.

you manually changed your ip like in the tcp/ip settings?

Sounds like the tech was just being lazy. I've called cox a couple times and they're tech support was usually pretty good about fixing my downs but I guess like all things it is luck of the draw

yep, it was something like 192.168.100.9 and I changed it to .10
I just looked up the DNS servers on ipconfig/all and manually changed it.

I just moved into this place the other day so they could have been monitoring the people that were here before me. Like I said I dont think I have any viruses on this computer and I am running a virus scan as well.

You do realize that the 192.168.x.x range is for local networks right?

Unless you had an address conflict or your router/dhcp server was borked,, changing the address shouldn't have done anything.

Yea that's what i figured when he said changed his ip which is why I asked. It's still kinda odd the tech would say his 'ip' is blocked but then again, probably just being lazy.

yep, i understand that but I dont have access to the modem or router. its just a wall jack so my connection is being routed somewhere on the premesis. so im guessing someone from cox went into the router and blocked the ip address.

Lets take a step back here for a second.

You're saying that your ISP has access to your router and can control you LAN configuration?

sounds like his internets is rented with the apt.

Obviously, but shouldn't he be getting his own unique IP/connection instead of the Apartment leasing a single line and distributing it via LAN to all it's residents?

And if the apartment is doing the single line method, shouldn't they be in control as opposed to Cox?

Forgive my ignorance, I don't have too much familiarity with apartment internet connections.

I suppose its up to the Landlord.

I have the internet all over my house both wired and wireless, all on my lan through my router.

In his case it would also depend on how many apts there are. It would be fine if no one hogs the lan with piracy. That would also explain the virus stuff too as that would be a security risk for everyone on the lan.

edit: the LL probably had Cox create the lan in the first place. So they would be responsible for its upkeep and security.

If its blasting traffic YES! I worked for a dial up isp for a few years and we would block you if you were "blasting" traffic (i know its hard to blast on dialup"

I'm the next state over and Cox has been doing a lot of work in my area. They said it would be fixed in the next 72 hours. I know they boosted the power to the lines because I had a Cox amp in my place and it screwed up my connection, so they came and removed it.

Not sure what the problem here is, but Cox support has gone from bad to worse over the last few years.

I always get a chuckle when I say that. :p Moreso after the powers-that-be decided to drop the "Communications" part. We're just supposed to be Cox.
