Cox checking downloaded files?

well my friend got caught, he had a copy of tomb raider on his computer in divx format, soon he got an email and call from Cox saying he has violated the DCMA or something. are we all being watched? i have DSL and i have never had such an email, ive downloaded a coupla movies. (YES I ADMIT IT) so is the era of filesharing over? o and is it illegal to download tv shows? does it matter where its from? some seinfeld episodes ive downloaded have been ripped from the DVD, that sounds like its copyrighted. but some others were taken from VHS that was taped from the Tv...isnt it ok to tape stuff off the tv?
 
If you have to ask, then it basically is illegal. RIAA is not anyone's friend.

From my understanding, it still isn't completely legal to tape something off the TV, then give it to a friend. For personal use only, I believe.
 
From what I've heard, your friend was probably sharing something copyrighted. The RIAA found it, found his IP and sent notice to Cox, who forwarded it on to him. It's probably not Cox watching directly. He's lucky he didn't get sued!

AFAIK It's illegal to redistribute them but not to download them so can only threaten you if you're sharing them, luckily for them bittorrent relies on everyone sharing the file they're downloading.

And it's not Cox watching you, it's MGM (and their contracted people) watching the popular sites and gathering IP addresses of people sharing their property.
