I signed up for high speed internet from their webpage.

4 days later I get the modem/starter pack with some ladies name on the label :disgust:

I call them and this person, who lived here over 3 years ago, used to have an account.

So before they give me service I need FAX them my apt lease. :|

WTF? When you buy someone's house you don't send them them the mortgage.

Well in that case, go to the office of your complex and ask them to type up a simple letter for you.

a power bill should suffice to prove you reside there.

all included in my rent

Hence the request for your lease then. They have every right to refuse you service if they think you're the same person that used to live there, and very likely still owes them money. Prove to them that you're not, and they'll give you service.

Waa waa waa.

The person who used to live there either skipped or closed an account with a balance due. They just need to ensure that they aren't infact opening a new account for the same person. A letter from your landlord would also most likely be fine.

Well what pisses me off is I expected to have internet today. Why the hell would they send a cable modem to a deadbeat? Why not call me and say someone is on this account?

It is standard practice and if that situation was a purchase instead of a rent, you would actually send them proof of the purchase.

Call and tell them you don't need because you are just gonna get DSL and cancel cable internet, but make it so you aren't 100% sure and see if you can get a deal....
