Cox Cable - reported speeds not reached?

Overall, my cable service is pretty good. According to Cox, I have 4.0MB down / 512 kbps up. This is fine, but sometimes I wish I had more. For an extra $15/mo I can get 5.0/768. Since my roommate and I split it, this isn't much. The problem is, I never seem to see my rated download speed, even from big sites like Apple (download trailers) or Microsoft (patches, etc.)

I've called Cox and they say the modem is seeing 4.0 - 4.3 download, upload is 540. The most I ever see is about 350-375kB/sec which is about 3.0Mbps. I never see 400kB+.

I've only gotten one speed test to register 4.0Mb/sec, and that is this one. I was only able to establish this on my gateway (see the duallie in my sig). My P4 is connected to it via a 100MB switch. I'm using ICS to share the connection. Network load balancing is unchecked, QoS is not installed. Is this an issue with my connection or is there something I should change on my gateway or main rig?

I've ran tests from broadbandreports.com, pcpitstop.com and testmy.net. On average I get about 3.2Mbps, Upload is about 512 Kbps. I'm in Phoenix and they do claim 4Mbps. I've seen 4Mbps on rare occasions. I'd like to have more consistant speeds but I really cant complain.

Try connecting your machine directly to the ethernet connection on your cable modem.

If you get your rated speed there (which you most likely will) you're fine.

That speed test just showed me at 3.6mb. My upload seems to top out at 60kbps. I've definitely seen DL speeds over 400k though.

Remember, older Netgear stuff (metal blue box..not THAT old) has a maximum transfer rate of 1.5Mbps with SPI on.....jsut imagine how crappy some of the new stuff is.
