Coworker fired for Athiest views?

I don't have the whole story, mostly because management isn't talking. But it seems someone got offended by this coworker's repeated statements of his Athiest views and occasional ridicule of formal religions.

Obviously he isn't quiet about his views, but it really ticks me off that someone is so thin skinned and threatened by someone who believes differently that they would call HR and claim "hostile work environment" over religion.

:|

EDIT: It seems quite a few of you can't read. I never said he ridiculed any individuals. Only religions themselves. And this was in conversations with other athiests. In my opinion it's NO different than religions icons or whatever people have all over their desks.

Not that I'm aware of, but the person who called it in has yet to be identified.

your coworker is an idiot for saying stuff like that at work. not only is it unprofessional, but its stupid. The company is just being careful as well they should be. Have him read Title VII. Oh and see Harris v. Forklift Systems, Inc. 510 U.S. 17 (1993).

I think it would be more along the lines of wrongful termination.

No way. He was a moron for spouting off in a professional environment. Can you imagine a Christian ridiculing a Hindu? They'd be fired in seconds.

Which in of itself is SICK.

We should all be free to ridicule each other, and mature enough to laugh at our own flaws and foibles.

Not a case to fire him without first giving warning of his inappropriate behavior then.

Why? Christians get to have their "daily psalms" and crosses and crap at their desks.

Thats at their desks, not in the ears of coworkers.

Work is for working, not for ranting about your views.

Hehe. I wasn't thinking of it that way, but I guess a little bit of both ;)

I agree, but not in the workplace. If you want stupid PC laws in place you have to enforce them regardless.

then have your atheist friend talk to the boss about the person who spouts their religion off (by having crosses on their desk or the psalms) and get them fired. I agree, your friend should have shut up. No place for religion (or lack there of) in the workplace...unless you work in a church.

And I assert that it's retarted that they exist in the first place.

Religious discussion is best kept outside of work. If two employees wish to talk about it, they should do so over lunch off of company grounds.

That's just the way it is.

Businesses have a right to maintain a calm and cooperative work environment.

He can spout off all he wants on his own time, but if he's interupting the operations of the business he deserves to be fired.

There's a difference between having a cross at your desk or reading the Bible in the morning and spouting anti-religious sentiments, repeatedly verbally offending fellow employees. He was a dumbass.

We ARE free to do so. That's why he's not going to jail. However, the employer has the right to terminate employees for being confrontational, hard to work with, being an asshole, etc.

How do you know the business was interrupted at all? All I said is he makes his views very clear.

I just think it's sick that we've become so paranoid and over sensitive about things that it's worth firing someone over.

i agree with that except they should be allowed to have whatever they want on their desk. it doesnt need to be discussed among people in the workplace, but not being able to put a cross or anything with biblically related text on your desk is equally wrong.

the guy was an idiot and deserved to get canned. you are an idiot as well if you think he was in the right. also, the christians in your workplace need to be fired if they are criticizing or poking fun at others like your idiot friend. if they engage in conversation or discussion on their breaks, that is a different story. criticism is not ok and that rule should be applied equally to everyone. btw, im a christian.

Co-worker wasn't fired for his athiestic views, he was fired because he had no tolerance for others.
