$200? You don't say...that's how much the one I'm saving for right now is (rotary HDS).

In AT Garage people laugh if you have less than the V8 model, in CPU people laugh if you have less than the i7, in ATOT people laugh if you don't make 6 figures. Then in P&N people bitch about how they can't afford houses due to high taxes or that "we need 2 incomes to get by!" and it's the same people who wasted money on crap they don't need.

That said, some people really do need a $200 light.

People laugh at me because I ride a 650cc motorcycle.

I'm happy with my $35 LED 3D Maglite. I have a $65 3 LED Aurora headlamp too. Love it.

Ya, but you will go blind if you stare at them.

I just buy those bright cheap LED flashlights off of dealextreme. They may not be as bright as the $100+ lights, but they're more than enough for me.

I would not complain about $200 for a flashlight. I also have good ones (Maglite) 3 D cell and they run about $40 or so, plus an upgrade to the better LED Bulb and Glass lens instead of the plastic it comes with. I also have a laser for my pistol and that cost about $400 .. you pay for good quality. The Maglite is weather resistant and very sturdy. One light tap and it can knock you out cold.

I keep a $200 torch in my backpack. Have one on my 870HD as well.

I prefer my torches much cheaper...

You pay for things like tint and color rendition, quality heatsinking, designs that survive torture testing, well thought out firmware for torches with a uC, etc.. Sometimes the more expensive ones will be brighter, but that's not assured. Also, there is the cost from having development and manufacturing done here in the US.

In between, it's hard to beat Mags and Quarks.

$200 is too much for me but that's just because I'm always broke. I use a $70 3 CR123A 200 lumen tactical on on the side of my airsoft AR and I love the thing. When I finally build my actual AR it will go into that but for now it's hooked to a pressure sensitive pad on the side of my front grip. The thing is awesome in the woods at night and for blinding those shooting at you.

Can't many of these actually do damage to your eyes at close range? Not so cool if its just airsoft.

I paid $70 for two EagleTac lights that serve me just fine, and I thought that was even ridiculous. I can't fathom why people would pay hundreds.

Oh yea. I definitely understand that, but at the same time, those tiny $15-$20 flashlights from dealextreme are better than anything I could buy at a similar price, and I don't get too upset when I lose one or break one.

It's kinda like buying sunglasses (or anything really). Some like to buy a really expensive pair of sunglasses (like me), and it's hard to quantify why they're worth that price to people who haven't used them, and then there's another group of people who are perfectly happy buying $10 gas station sunglasses.

Meh. We have lots of little flashlights as well as a maglight scattered round the house and car for dark places and emergencies, but I still wouldn't mind having a single really, really powerful, outdoorsy type torch.

Surefires are overpriced for the output.
They are really nice and high quality, but you can get almost as good quality and better output for around $20.
dealextreme and kaidomain

It's all about the lithiums baby.
