Cover songs, any royalties?

When a band does a cover song and puts it on a CD, do they have to pay the original artist any type of fees? Just curious...

They're required to pay royalties to the owner of the copyrighted work.

Moby for example is licencing a lot of his songs out and has made a fortune doing it. He's made more with licencing then with record sales.

Anyone know how much royalty fees would cost? It's based on total sales I'm assuming...

There are several different types of royalties depending on how the work is to be used, such as live performance, recording, mechanical and several others. To obtain permission, you would go to ASCAP or BMI.
