Cousin wants a car for $25,000

Any other recommendations? I know absolutely nothing about cars in this price category. Probably because I drive an econocar and ride a bike.

New? They're nice, but small and spendy for what you get. If he's looking for the most bang for his $25k, that isn't it. He could get a used S60R for that much though if he looked hard enough.

If he doesn't get the AWD and the T5 engine. Your cousin is better off with a Mazda 3, since that's the same platform that the S40 is based off of.

She'll use it just for a daily driver.

A 4-cylinder Accord or Camry will last forever and get decent gas mileage. They're not the most exciting cars, but there's a reason they sell so well.

My cousin doesn't want a Japanese car because she thinks they're too unsafe in accidents.

Might want to show her some crash ratings for many of the non-compact Japanese manufacturers.

It looks like the S40 got Good ratings in Front and Back and Acceptable in Side.
It looks like the Mazda3 got the Good rating in the front but Poor in the Side.

It's a mixed bag. The best of the bunch is the Japanese-built Subaru Legacy. There are a number of German and Japanese cars rated higher than the Volvo.

Why are you focusing on miniature foreign cars ?

Is that what she wants or is it because that's what you are familiar with ?

What she wants. I'm just the messenger.

Well if she decides to give American cars a chance, these are pretty sweet. And mid-sized and large cars are inherently safer than smaller cars.

Mercury Milan

Saturn Aura

I have an 04 V40 that I bought new/used. I love the wagon functionality. Not as stylish as the new V50 but it still works for me. The R is nice but I think I'm really only in love with the cobalt blue gauges on it. Used is the only way I would consider the R too. It might be worth holding out for the new C30. That should be a nice car. I have a hard time not wanting a wagon, just too useful.

If I recall correctly, they tested the mazda3 w/o side airbags.... and now it's pretty much standard new.

As for the focus comment... step outside the US, it's a pretty good car. The one here is NOT based on the C1 platform (yet, well, don't remember if 2007 is)

The US Focus is still a fine car, even though it isn't based on the latest C1 platform. The fact that it isn't means it's considerably cheaper, it still has many of the same characteristics, like sophisticated ride and handling for it's class and price.

Go out and actually drive a 5 door Focus and compare it to a Mazda 3. I have and aside from interior and exterior styling, and about $4000, they're more alike than they are different.

The mazda did poorly on the side due to not having side airbags for the test. Option them up and it does much better.

If she wants one of the safest medium sized cars, then tell her to get a subaru legacy
