Before antibiotics were discovered in the 1940s lots of infections could be fatal. If antibiotic resistance continues to increase as a problem elective surgery may become too risky.

Frontline on PBS is doing a show on antibiotic resistance right now.
Since people only take antibiotics for a short time they don't make as much money.
Antibiotic resistance isn't mentioned on death certificates.

We had a few cases in fairly quick succession here in GA a few years ago. This pretty blonde girl got it from riding a homemade zip line and falling off and getting a cut in her leg infected. She lost her hands and feet.

Sorry to hear that OP. It's such a low probability, completely random thing and that makes it even harder to accept.

I remember that story. From what I recall, the big thing was that it was a deep puncture. Another story from a while back concerned a lady losing all her limbs because a dog nipped her hand, she got blood poisoning. Again, deep puncture.

Wow. That's so sad.

I will never complain about my life ever again.

Thanks everyone for the support.

I drove up with most of my family on Monday to go see him at the hospital in Vegas and thankfully I was also able to get flights for two of my other family members from New York with my credit card points.

I really didn't know what to expect going in. It all felt so surreal. Monday night the doctors basically said there's not much left they could do and that he was suffering. If he were to live, he would be without any limbs and would need machines to have his organs function. Apparently when he was admitted, the first thing he told the doctors were to not cut anything off.

Our family made the decision to cut the medication and stop the ventilator Tuesday morning and let him pass naturally and peacefully with the morphine drip.

Less than a week in the hospital.. 🙁

Putting together a fund for the medical and funeral arrangements to aid my aunts and other cousins. If anyone wants to put anything in, we would be forever grateful.
