I found these on Slashdot:

http://observer.guardian.co.uk/world/story/0,,2047459,00.html?gusrc=rss&feed=12
http://www.newscientist.com/blog/shorts...ial.html?DCMP=Matt_Sparkes&nsref=chimp
http://www.wesleyjsmith.com/blog/2005/1...p-becomes-litigant-granted-habeas.html

It seems the monkey has already been extended habeas corpus and they are going to rule on if the monkey should have a "legal guardian."

Great, here's something else that is going to have better legal protection than us white males.

If monkey's get human rights, then I want monkey rights. Namely the ability to walk around with no clothes on and throw feces at people who I don't like.

"humanness" and granting "human-status" seem like a semantic mistake. While I could see considering granting chimpanzees a degree of personhood, they certainly are not "humans." The terms "people" and "humans" do not have to be mutually inclusive.

Where in North Carolina would you harvest monkeys to put on the menu?

Chimps are NOT monkeys, they are two completely different offshoots from each other. Monkeys have tails and are a hell of a lot more stupid than apes.

Yes. You are correct. The fact that chimps do not have tails is extremely relevant to the court's decision to proceed with this case.

I don't think we're at a point as a civilization where we can be making up rights for animals yet. We can't even grant basic human rights to every person yet...

I mean, there are still pigs out there who think that gays, non-religious people and anyone not white are less than human.

We're killing eachother over differences in fairy-tales, and we're trying to dictate the lives of other species...? Too soon.

It was recently discovered that dolphins are actually as smart as mice... They have large brains, but most of that brain matter is fat, to keep their brain warm.

It's sad, really.

So THIS is how we went about getting AIDS from lesser primates. Damn legal proceedings!

Ok, If they do give him human rights I hoe they immediately arrest him for being nude in public, and cast him as a sex offender.

Dateline can do a special on it. To catch a monkey-predator.
