in early november someone hit my car and took off. he didn't see any damage but it was getting dark and my car is black. understandable. i filled out a police report, talked with the guy, and his insurance is going to pay for the damage (only in the 600+$ range). he has court for hit and run in a week and i don't want to see him get a ticket for something like this, especially since we have since worked this out, but if i help him and if he gets off, will his insurance refuse to then pay for the damage? what would you guys do?

if he took off after he hit you...how'd you find out it was him? does this seem to be a reocurring theme for him?

coworker got his license plate. i'm not sure if this a recurring theme for him but it didn't sound like it when I talked with him.

regardless if he thought there was damage or not he should have left you a note. and if he's going to court for a similiar matter i'd make sure you get your money out of this guy. he may seem nice enough, but what he is doing is a major character flaw.

If you think he honestly didn't see any damage, contact the police or the city attorney's office, and let them know. If the guy has a history of doing this, they'll know, and it won't make any difference, but if not, speaking up will save him a lot of undeserved hassle.

You'd want him to do that if the situation was reversed.

toekramp, he's going to court because of the hit and run report i filled out. if he hit someone else and left then i wouldn't try and help him.
harvey, good idea, i think i will try to contact the city attorney's office and let them know. not sure if i want to show up at his court date (not sure if i need to show up anyways). but i will try to get my repair money first. can his insurance refuse to pay for the damage if the city dismisses the hit and run charge?

Yeah--- definitely a character flaw, BE SURE TO get your cash. Some bastard hit my car in the 3 corner section of it (i.e. they damaged three panels by hitting one point) so I have no mercy for hit and run.

He did the dirty deed (hitting you) so he, or his insurance company, still owes you the money. If he didn't know he did any damage, he didn't intend to hit and split so the only thing you want to do is help him get off the more serious hook of a hit and run conviction.
