couple quick questions

I have been searching for some of the answers to these questions and haven't been able to find anything, so I figured I'd start a single thread and throw everything in here.

1 - Are there any projects that wouldn't be ideal for a file server due to not freeing up resources?

2 - For BOINC and other SMP projects, are there limits on how many processors / cores? (Basically, if I have a machine with 8 cores, are there any projects I should avoid).

3 - On almost every linux config I see, Ubuntu is used. I am thinking about installing OpenSuSE on a machine along with Samba. Will BOINC work on this distro? (I believe it is going to be the standard linux install, correct?)

4 - Is there a process for renaming my username in the DC projects? Or do I just start using the new name, and everything prior to this will be under the old name?

I do in fact have a question to add! Can we also purchase a small gas engine and steering wheel so the cats can drive around in your server? Since it already has wheels and all? Pretty please? Oh oh! and CUTE little goggles?

BOINC should work with any Linux. I am using Debian/GNU Linux AMD64 and most projects work fine. I had to go to the testing version to get 5.10.x because Cosmology@Home needed it.

Some projects have optimized apps for Windows and not Linux and vice versa, so you may want to be somewhat selective about what you crunch if you want to be competitive.

The best thing about it is you can download the source and compile it for your version.

I don't recommend you to install OpenSuse, you can't install boinc on it, only folding@home works...

Based on the Rosetta memory usage thread, I'd avoid Rosetta if you've got 8 cores. I think all the projects will be a trial and error deal though. See if it works like it should.

In my experience with various BOINC--projects there's no problem, as long as you don't hit any of the memory-preferences so multiple extra copies is started due to some "waiting on memory".

Also, using a small cache is an advantage, this minimizes any chances multiple tasks needs to run in "earliest deadline 1st."-mode at the same time, starting multiple copies.

In BOINC just increase "Use at most N cpu's" if set too low, and it will use all cores, as long as OS supports it that is...

If you've got lots of memory, there's in theory no problem running all projects. But, some projects is heavily dependent on memory-speed, so with some projects it's possible to saturate memory-system so example there's no difference in credit/day between 7 and 8 instances... Would example not want to get 8 CPDN HADAM3-models at once, among other things they'll each use 430 MB memory...

But, if you've selected multiple projects with roughly equal resource-share, chances are you'll have a healthy mix so less chance hitting memory-bottleneck...


For non-BOINC, Folding@Home does have a limit of how many clients can run at once, but 8 core should be possible to utilize without any problems, even in off-chance don't use smp-client.

Never tried BOINC on Linux, but in case the standard linux-install doesn't work, it's still a good chance either an older BOINC-client works, or there's someone else that has built a workable client...

For BOINC, just go to each projects web-site, and change your username, and all your credits should move to the new user-name as the stats is updated.

In Folding@Home on the other hand, you'll start on zero again, since FAH doesn't really have any accounts at all, but anyone can type-in whatever username they wants...

We tried to get a picture of the two dogs and the cat (together) with red and white Christmas hats on ... not easy, settled for just the two dogs
