As soon as I either sell my 7900GT or my tax return comes (whichever comes first), I'll be moving to an X1900.

Before I do so, I have a couple of ???s ofr you guys.

1. Is there any real difference between the XT and the XTX?? Do the XTXs really have cherry picked cores? Is it worth the extra $40 to go XTX?

2. Does ATI TrayTools workwith the XTX to where u dont have to use the CCC??

3. What about ATI Tool? What are you guys using to get the clocks past the overdrive limit?

Thanks

1) There is a difference between the two from what I have seen. The XTX's generally oc better by ~20-30MHz on the core (mem seems about the same). You'll have to decide if it's worth the extra money or not.

2) Yes

3) Just use ATI Tool. That is the best overclocking program for the X1900 series card that I've found so far.

The XTX supposedly OCes a little better.
But screw the difference, just get the XT, OC it and put the $40 towards something else (eg. aftermarket cooler, extra RAM, another HDD, beer, etc. :p )

QFT, imo the xtx isn't worth the premium. My x1900xt pushed way above xtx speeds easily. (it's in my FS thread right now if your interested)

Winner. Take the difference and get an Accelero X2 so your ears don't bleed from the stock cooler. :p

Thanks for the replies guys. I'm actually excited to switch over from 7800GT SLI.

Not having to use CCC is a big plus for me because I hate using it with my Intel P4/Radeon 9700 rig.

I also already have an ACS X2 that I'm going to slap on it.

I have my X1900XT OC'ed to either 700MHz core @1.35v (yes thats 0.05v less that stock voltage at way higher speeds), or 725Mhz @1.425v. When playing Oblivion, I game with it at 725Mhz just to get every ounce of speed I can. My ram goes up to about 830Mhz before crapping out so I run it at 825Mhz just to play it safe.

Cooling for my XT is provided by an ultra customized Thermalright V1 Setup. For more info, see my sig for my project logs.

What program do you people use for changing the core voltage on your cards?

I have an XT and it's a really poor overclocker, I can barely get an extra 10-20MHz on the core over stock speed.

I don't have one, but from what I've read and seen, there's sod all point in XTX's. XT's tend to O/C okayish.

Spend the other $40 on beer or an aftermarket cooler.

I'd say the beer. But that's just me.

Check out the HIS, they have a half decent cooler on their 1900XT's as it is, my uncles got one running in his, and it's no louder than when he was running some 9x00 series card. Granted, he has a fair few fans in there as it is, but. Meh, negotiable. Just turn the volume up.

I got the XTX and am happy with it. The only reason I grabbed it over the XT was that there was a sale at Monarch that brought it down to $430.... the same price as an XT (though Dell had some kind of coupon/sale thingy that brought an XT down below $400 but I missed that). So it was a no-brainer to me.

It seems to overclock well enough. I have mine set at 675/840 and it works well. I am still playing with dynamic fan settings to find the perfect mix using the stock cooler. At 50-75%, the fan noise isn't bad at all, but at 100%, it is (I keep it at 27% in non-3d mode, which is quiet enough for me). So, I've been playing with 75 and 85%, trying to find a % that isn't too loud, but also doesn't have the GPU temp continue to rise and rise. When the fan kicks on at 100%, it cools down the GPU within about 15 seconds and then winds back down to 77%. It goes up and down like that every few minutes. My goal is to find the perfect setting that stops the GPU temp from rising to the point of needing the fan at 100%.
