Couple Opera questions..

My status bar won't appear on my screen. It's checked under the View menu, and when I try to customize my Opera it appears, but when I close the custom menu it goes away.

Secondly, how can I do a search so that it will find the text I want as I'm typing? As oposed to the default CTRL+F find?

While in the Customize screen, choose the status bar and uncheck "Shown only when needed" option.
To the second question, press .

The bar that when you roll over a link will tell you where it leads to.
