I need a faster lens. My F2.8s don't cut it in almost total darkness. I switched to my 50mm F1.8, had ISO at 1600 and could only get shutters of 1/30 at the end of the night. I need to go buy myself a 1.4 or 1.2.

What do you guys do when the lights are so damned low in the ballroom? I was using my 580EX with a lightsphere diffuser, ISO 1600 and F2.8 or 1.8 depending on the lens. Anything better to do, or do you just have to suck it up and take it?

Anyways, here are some pics. I was pleased that really the only thing I had to do was some minor color corrections and vignetting for style. Now to just get my hands on lightroom to edit the rest.

That's when you pull out assistants carrying wireless flashes, set up studio strobes, or buy a D3.

What camera do you have? Have you tried ISO 3200?

Take a look at this:

That seems to work better for me than any of Gary Fong's stuff.

Walmart has a sheet of foam paper for like $.30

It bounces, plus throws a little more light forward.

When it gets that dark, I just put my Joe Demb bouncer card into my pocket, and then angle my 580 flash around 45 degrees. One of things I started doing this summer. There is enough light going up to bounce around, and the more direct flash makes white balance a ton easier. In the reception, I never go below 1/80 of a second. I don't want to loose pics from motion blur. Receptions have dances, and all the other traditional activities with too much motion.
Bouncing the flash off the ceiling doesn't give you the motion freezing power you usually get with a direct flash, so I try to watch the shutter speed at all cost.
For one wedding, I tried ISO 3200, and it worked out awesome.

Bounce flash. That is all.

I shoot dark receptions all the time.

Bounce flash, ISO 800 or 1600. I use the 17-55mm f/2.8 IS and 70-200 f/2.8 IS and I have enough to work with.

A diffuser reduces the light output of your flash.
